The Jharkhand High Court has taken decisive action concerning the alarming shortage of medical professionals within state prisons. A public interest litigation was triggered by the death of a prisoner, who failed to receive adequate treatment while in custody. The court heard that the inmate, who suffered from renal issues, had petitioned for bail to receive medical care outside the inadequate jail facilities.
The harrowing incident shed light on the administrative failure, exposing that among 43 sanctioned doctor positions in state jails, only one is currently filled. With deficient medical infrastructure plaguing six central and multiple district jails, the court has flagged the urgency of the situation, mandating an inquiry into the vacancies.
As a further step, the high court has granted the deceased prisoner's family the right to pursue compensation. The division bench has referred the critical matter to the Chief Justice for expedited adjudication, highlighting the state's obligation to ensure humane conditions for its incarcerated population.
