In an alarming revelation from Lunglei district in Mizoram, 16 convicts walked free from jail due to forged court documents, sparking a significant scandal. The incident recently came to light, prompting immediate police action. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to delve into this unsettling breach.
Leading the investigation is a four-member SIT, headed by Sub-Divisional Police Officer R Thankima. As part of the inquiry, law enforcement identified Jeremy Lalthangtura, a 22-year-old inmate already involved in online fraud, as the scheme's mastermind. Twelve released convicts have been recaptured, while the search for three others continues. Tragically, one convict died while evading capture.
The forgery operation, suspected to have begun early this year, went unnoticed until last week when Lunglei court officials discovered a lack of judicial records for the inmate releases. Jail deputy superintendent Lalruatsanga explained that the counterfeit documents, replete with fake seals mimicking authentic directives, passed initial scrutiny, leading to the unauthorized releases.
