Census 2027 has marked a significant digital milestone with the introduction of a self-enumeration facility, which has been availed by around 82 lakh households across the country. Government reports confirm that the initial houselisting and housing operations (HLO) phase has commenced in several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh.
Field operations, which kicked off following a 15-day self-enumeration window, will continue until May 30, 2026. During this period, trained enumerators will go door-to-door to collect data using a specially developed mobile application, a first for the census exercise. They will pose 33 questions relating to household facilities and personal details.
This digital shift marks a groundbreaking moment for Census 2027, preparing the groundwork for the subsequent population enumeration phase scheduled for the following year. The initiative has received positive public reception, with field operations underway in regions from Telangana to Punjab.
