The police have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the tragic swing collapse at the Surajkund International Crafts Fair, which resulted in one death and multiple injuries. The owner of the swing, Shubham Gupta, was arrested and later released on bail. Other key figures involved, including the swing agency owner and operators, had been apprehended earlier.
The swing collapse incident on February 7 led to the death of Police Inspector Jagdish Prasad and injuries to 12 others, prompting the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter. The incident raised questions about safety measures at public events as the swing was installed without essential documentation, triggering charges of culpable homicide, later upgraded to death by negligence.
Gupta, the primary owner of the ill-fated Tsunami swing, purchased it for Rs 40 lakh and had an agreement to split proceeds with the contractor, Mohammad Shakir. Despite multiple notices to participate in the investigation, Gupta's lack of cooperation led to his recent arrest. The SIT continues its investigation, planning to submit a supplementary charge sheet after further questioning of Gupta.
