EU Pushes USA for Swift Trade Tariff Restoration
The European Union has called on the United States to promptly restore tariffs as outlined in last year's EU-US trade deal. EU's Maros Sefcovic and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met in Paris to discuss critical aspects of the agreement, with car tariffs being a major concern.
The European Union is pressing the United States to quickly reimplement the tariffs stipulated in the EU-US trade agreement from last year, according to a statement by the European Commission on Tuesday.
During a meeting in Paris between EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the primary focus was on addressing U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed tariff hikes on EU cars and trucks to 25%. Key elements agreed upon in the previous deal, including reducing EU duties on U.S. industrial goods, are yet to be implemented, but are not expected before June.
The European Commission emphasized the importance of finalizing the deal's main terms by its first anniversary at the end of July, urging a return to the agreed Turnberry terms, which include a 15% all-inclusive tariff rate with specific exemptions for the EU.
