New Leadership Takes Helm at Aizawl Municipal Corporation

The Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) welcomes a new board led by Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) on May 7. The ZPM achieved a landslide victory in recent elections. H Lalremtluanga becomes Mayor, with R Lalawmpuii as Deputy Mayor. An immediate halt to projects under the 15th Finance Commission Grant was ordered.

The Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set for a transition as the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM)-led board takes office on May 7, officials announced. The new board will be inaugurated at the AMC's Board of Corporators' meeting hall, with the oath administered by Aizawl Deputy Commissioner and District Municipal Officer Lalhriatpuia, who is overseeing the ceremony arrangements.

In the recent elections on April 21, the ZPM made significant inroads, capturing 17 of the 19 available seats. This victory comes amid a backdrop of political competition, with the Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress each securing a single seat. Remarkably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which fielded candidates for 11 seats, failed to win any.

As the new leadership prepares to take office, AMC administrator and Municipal Commissioner Joseph H. Lalramsanga has initiated a halt on all works sanctioned under the 15th Finance Commission Grant for 2024–2025. This directive, effective immediately, mandates the cessation of ongoing projects and prohibits the initiation of new ones.
