Ceasefire Tensions: Ukraine Accuses Russia of Violations Amid Peace Proposal
Ukraine has accused Russia of violating a proposed ceasefire with continued attacks, despite President Zelenskiy's initiative for peace. Moscow denies committing to the ceasefire. The situation escalates as both sides prepare for Victory Day, with threats of further military action. Peace talks remain stalled amid these tensions.
Ukraine accused Russia on Wednesday of disregarding a proposed ceasefire initiated by Kyiv with numerous military assaults. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described Russia's actions as an 'obvious spurning' of peace efforts in response to the Ukrainian government's overture, which was meant to coincide with Russia's World War Two victory celebrations.
Zelenskiy claimed Russia had committed 1,820 ceasefire violations by Wednesday morning. In a nightly address, he indicated Ukraine's readiness to respond militarily if Russia continues its attacks, emphasizing that Ukraine's commitment to peace stands firm despite Russia's aggressive maneuvers.
As tensions rise ahead of Victory Day commemorations, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned diplomatic missions of possible mass strikes from Kyiv, leading to fears of escalated conflict. Meanwhile, drone strikes have resulted in fatalities in the Sumy region, and air raids impact major Ukrainian cities as peace talks stall amidst continued hostilities.
