China's Growing Influence on Bangladesh's Teesta River Restoration
Bangladesh's new government, led by Tarique Rahman, seeks China's support for the Teesta River restoration project, potentially impacting relations with India. During a meeting in Beijing, both countries discussed enhancing cooperation, aligning with China's Belt and Road initiative. Meanwhile, India's offer to assist highlights ongoing diplomatic tensions in South Asian river management.
In a strategic move, Bangladesh's new government under Tarique Rahman has formally requested China's involvement in the Teesta River restoration project. This initiative is seen as potentially straining ties with neighboring India, given the shared interests in river management.
During a recent meeting, Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi convened to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation. China pledged to align its Belt and Road cooperation with Bangladesh’s development strategies, promising to deepen ties in traditional sectors.
While China supports Bangladesh's sovereignty, India's concurrent offer of technical assistance with the Teesta River underlines the ongoing South Asian diplomatic tensions. As water-sharing treaties near expiry, the geopolitical dynamics remain fluid.
