High-Profile Corruption Sentences Shake Chinese Military Leadership
Former Chinese defense ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu were sentenced to death with reprieves for corruption. The crackdown, directed by Xi Jinping, targets military top brass, including elite Rocket Force members. These purges, impacting China's military readiness, underscore the seriousness of China's ongoing anti-corruption efforts.
In a major development, former Chinese defense ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu have been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by the country's judiciary, as reported by state news agency Xinhua on Thursday. This decision marks the severity of the military purge aimed at rooting out corruption within the ranks.
The crackdown, which began under President Xi Jinping's leadership in 2012, has intensified, reaching the upper echelons of the People's Liberation Army in 2023, including the elite Rocket Force. Earlier this year, the initiative led to the removal of the top general, Zhang Youxia, highlighting the significant internal upheaval.
Investigations revealed that Li and Wei misused their positions for personal gains, accepting large bribes. Their actions have severely compromised the integrity of China's defense capabilities. The International Institute for Strategic Studies suggests that these ongoing purges could be impacting the operational efficiency of the modernizing armed forces.
