The Government has granted another six-month extension to the Commission of Inquiry into the 2023 Manipur violence, allowing the panel until November 20, 2026, to submit its findings. Former Supreme Court judge Balbir Singh Chauhan leads the probe, succeeding Ajai Lamba, who resigned earlier this year.
The inquiry investigates the violent clashes that erupted in May 2023, during a 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the northeastern state. The violence, primarily driven by the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status, resulted in more than 260 deaths and was preceded by tensions over land evictions.
This is the Commission's fifth extension, indicating the complexity of the investigation. It aims to identify any administrative lapses and evaluate the adequacy of measures taken to manage and mitigate the conflict and its impacts on the community.
