A significant quantity of codeine-based cough syrup was intercepted in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, leading authorities to suspend its sale and commence a thorough investigation. This move comes as the regulatory bodies seek to determine the source and intended distribution network for these restricted medicines.
The seizure involved 132 cartons, totaling 3,168 bottles, stored in a warehouse in Janki Nagar. The local administration and drug department quickly acted on intelligence to secure the shipment, which the investigators suggest was ordered from Noida by a local pharmaceutical firm. Officials have now collected samples and banned sales until their inquiry concludes.
Inspectors are reviewing purchase documents and supply chain details provided by the firm. The investigation aims to clarify the reasons behind such a large order and its intended distribution area. Past instances of illegal storage and sale in the district have heightened scrutiny on codeine-based products due to their potential misuse.
