Bangladesh-India Border Tensions Resurface Amid Migration Dispute
Bangladesh reports thwarting attempts by India to push undocumented migrants across the border, a move threatening bilateral relations. Accusations of informal transfers of Bengali-speaking Muslims into Bangladesh have complicated efforts to have smoother diplomatic ties post the 2024 political shift in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has reported several incidents of attempted forced migrations by India over the past 24 hours, straining the diplomatic relationship between the neighboring countries. The dispute centers around allegations of undocumented migration across their shared 4,000-km border.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) revealed it intercepted 10 such attempts by Indian forces. Despite ongoing tensions, India has yet to respond to requests for clarification. The Bharatiya Janata Party's crackdowns on illegal migration target Bengali-speaking Muslims, further complicating international relations after Bangladesh’s recent leadership changes.
The BGB maintains that illegal entries will be strictly opposed and urges that any persons identified as Bangladeshis in India must be returned via formal channels. The issue will feature prominently in bilateral talks held in New Delhi.
