Federal Judge Rules Against Trump's Immigration Policies
A U.S. federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration unlawfully barred immigrants from 39 countries from receiving immigration decisions. The ruling came from a lawsuit challenging policies enacted by USCIS, which placed holds on applications due to travel bans. The judge condemned the discriminatory impact of these policies.
In a significant blow to former President Donald Trump's immigration policies, a U.S. federal judge has declared the barring of immigrants from 39 countries as unlawful. The decision targets the policies enacted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) under Trump's tenure.
Chief U.S. District Judge John McConnell, based in Providence, Rhode Island, laid down the ruling on Friday, stating that the series of policies under the Trump administration unjustly targeted individuals from countries affected by travel bans, relegating many to a legal limbo concerning immigration benefits.
This judgment emerged from a lawsuit filed in March by immigrant service organizations and labor unions. The policies had suspended processing applications for asylum, work permits, green cards, and citizenship. McConnell criticized the lack of legal adherence by USCIS and asserted the necessity for laws to apply equally to all, reinforcing the injustice experienced by affected immigrants due to these practices.
