British Forces Seize Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker Amidst Ukraine Conflict

British forces intercepted a Russian-sanctioned oil tanker, Smyrtos, under Cameroon flag, in the Channel. Led by Royal Marine Commandos and the NCA, the operation disrupts Russia's oil revenue for its war in Ukraine. Kyiv has urged further enforcement against such ships to bolster peace efforts.

In a significant move against Russia's war efforts in Ukraine, British forces intercepted a Russian-sanctioned oil tanker named Smyrtos in the English Channel on Sunday. The operation marked the first led by Britain to curb oil revenues funding Moscow's military intervention.

The Smyrtos, sailing under a Cameroon flag, was boarded by Royal Marine Commandos and National Crime Agency (NCA) officials. With assistance from Chinook helicopters, a frigate, and other aircraft, the operation successfully took place, as shown in government-released footage. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the resolve to disrupt financial support for Russia's military.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy praised the UK's action, urging Europe to adopt stronger measures against the shadow fleet. He suggested legislative changes to enable not only detention but also confiscation of oil from these tankers. British authorities stated that the tanker would be monitored off England's south coast as the investigation continues, working closely with the French government.
