French Media Regulator Orders CNews to Ensure Pluralism
France's media regulator, Arcom, has ordered CNews to adhere to rules on pluralism and diversity of opinion. The move comes following accusations that the channel favors far-right narratives. The order, issued less than a year before presidential elections, emphasizes balanced coverage and diverse viewpoints.
France's media watchdog, Arcom, has directed CNews to comply with regulations on pluralism and diversity of opinion, placing the ultra-conservative network owned by billionaire Vincent Bollore close to facing disciplinary measures.
CNews has been likened to Fox News in the U.S. due to its opinion-driven and polarizing content. Media critics accuse it of perpetuating far-right narratives, focusing heavily on topics like immigration and security. Arcom's order followed an investigation initiated by a Reporters Without Borders complaint, reviewing extensive airtime from the previous year.
Arcom chairman Martin Ajdari emphasized that their objective is to ensure the representation of diverse opinions, upholding France's 1986 broadcasting law. The move gains significance as France approaches a presidential election with strong far-right contenders. The regulator has also issued a formal warning to Radio France for underrepresenting the National Rally.
