Maria Fernanda Espinosa, an Ecuadorean candidate for the United Nations secretary-general, has expressed her vision for reforming and downsizing the world body responsibly. Espinosa is among the six candidates vying to succeed Antonio Guterres, whose term concludes at the year's end.
In her campaign, Espinosa, a former foreign and defense minister of Ecuador, highlighted the U.N.'s vital role while acknowledging its current shortcomings. She emphasized the necessity of revitalizing its credibility and proving its capacity for real change. Her approach includes empowering national governments with more responsibilities in areas traditionally managed by the U.N.
Nominated by Antigua and Barbuda, Espinosa distances herself from former Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa's party. The Ecuadorean government has yet to comment on her candidacy amid other contenders, including Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett from Guyana and other notable leaders. With no woman having ever held the position, Espinosa argues for the selection of the right female leader this time.
