Technology has emerged as one of the most powerful forces shaping modern societies, influencing everything from education and healthcare to governance and economic opportunities. Speaking at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Shri Harivansh highlighted how technological progress can become a catalyst for meaningful social transformation when its benefits reach every section of society.

Delivering the prestigious Sir Syed Ahmad Memorial Lecture, Shri Harivansh addressed students, scholars, academics, researchers, and public intellectuals on the theme "Role of Technology in Social Change: Indian Perspective." The annual lecture, organised by the Sir Syed Academy, honours the legacy of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and his contributions to education, social reform, and intellectual advancement.

During his address, Harivansh connected the ideas of technological progress with Sir Syed's enduring belief in modern education and scientific thinking, describing both as essential ingredients for national development in a rapidly changing world.

Sir Syed's Vision Remains Relevant in the Digital Age

Reflecting on the life and work of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Harivansh noted that the reformer consistently encouraged society to embrace new knowledge and scientific inquiry. According to him, the same spirit remains relevant today as countries navigate an era shaped by digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and rapid innovation.

Drawing examples from different countries and historical periods, he explained how technological breakthroughs have repeatedly altered social structures, expanded opportunities, and changed the way people interact with institutions and one another. From communication networks to digital platforms, technology continues to influence almost every aspect of daily life.

He pointed out that societies that successfully integrate knowledge, innovation, and scientific thinking into their development frameworks often create stronger foundations for progress. In this context, he described technology not merely as a collection of tools but as a driver of social and economic change capable of transforming communities on a large scale.

The lecture also highlighted the importance of adapting technological advancements to local realities. Harivansh stressed that innovation becomes more meaningful when it responds to the specific needs, aspirations, and cultural contexts of people rather than existing as an isolated achievement.

Bridging the Digital Divide for Inclusive Growth

A major focus of the address was the need to ensure that technological progress remains inclusive and accessible. Harivansh observed that technology can create significant opportunities, yet unequal access may widen existing social and economic gaps if corrective measures are not taken.

He called for continued efforts to bridge the digital divide and ensure that communities across regions, income groups, and social backgrounds benefit from technological advancements. Access to digital infrastructure, connectivity, education, and technological resources, he said, plays a crucial role in enabling wider participation in modern society.

Referring to developments in India over the past decade, he noted that the growing use of technology since 2014 has contributed to expanding access to various services and opportunities. Digital platforms have helped connect citizens with government services, educational resources, healthcare facilities, and financial systems in ways that were previously difficult to achieve at scale.

The Deputy Chairman also highlighted the role of technology in encouraging greater participation in democratic processes and governance. Easier access to information and digital communication tools has enabled citizens to engage more actively with public institutions and services.

He observed that technological interventions can strengthen social inclusion when they are designed to serve people at the grassroots level. In sectors such as education and healthcare, digital tools have expanded access and opened new possibilities for communities that previously faced barriers due to geography or limited resources.

Emerging Technologies Creating New Opportunities

Looking ahead, Harivansh spoke about the growing importance of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence and digital innovation, in shaping India's future development trajectory.

He referred to various initiatives, schemes, and programmes introduced by the present government to harness technological advancements for public welfare. According to him, these efforts have contributed to improving transparency, accountability, and efficiency in service delivery while expanding opportunities for citizens.

The increasing use of digital platforms has also helped simplify access to services and information, creating a more connected environment for individuals, businesses, and institutions. Harivansh noted that technology has become more accessible to ordinary citizens, reducing barriers that once limited participation in the digital ecosystem.

In his view, one of the most significant outcomes of recent technological expansion has been the democratisation of technology itself. Tools and platforms that were once available only to a limited segment of society are increasingly becoming accessible to larger sections of the population, creating opportunities for learning, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment.

The lecture reinforced the idea that technology's true value lies not only in innovation but in its ability to improve lives and strengthen social progress. When combined with education, scientific thinking, and inclusive policies, technological advancement can contribute to building a more equitable society.

Earlier, university authorities and members of the Sir Syed Academy welcomed the chief guest and reflected on the continuing relevance of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan's vision of combining modern education with social reform. Speakers noted that his ideas continue to inspire discussions on national development, knowledge creation, and social transformation.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from members of the university community as well as invited guests, reaffirming the significance of the Sir Syed Ahmad Memorial Lecture as one of AMU's most respected intellectual platforms.

As conversations around technology and society continue to evolve, the lecture offered a timely reminder that innovation achieves its greatest impact when it empowers people, expands opportunities, and contributes to the larger goal of inclusive national progress.
