Madhya Pradesh police are probing the Balaghat accident involving the escort vehicle of Deputy Speaker Hina Kawre from various angles after the Congress leader claimed that she had received letters threatening to kill her if she fails to pay Rs 20 lakh. Kawre, who escaped unhurt in the accident, however, dubbed it as a "mishap" even as she acknowledged the threat to her life. Three policemen and another person were killed when a truck hit their vehicle while they were escorting Kawre.

A constable in the escort vehicle received serious injuries in the mishap. "I am not taking the letters sent to me lightly given that ultras had killed my father in 1999," the deputy speaker told PTI over the phone. Her father Likhiram Kawre, a minister in the then Congress government was beheaded allegedly by ultras in the naxal-hit Balaghat district. A senior police officer said the letters being mentioned by Kawre were written in the name of one Pahad Singh, and are dated December 31 and January 10.

Balaghat superintendent of police A Jaydevan also said it appears that the letters were not penned by Naxals, but by an "anti-social element", and were posted from the district. The letters threatened to "blow up" Kawre if she fails to pay the money, he said. Balaghat, the home district of Kawre, borders naxal-hit districts of Rajnandgaon and Gondia in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, respectively. "Subsequently, Kawre had lodged a complaint with the police on January 3 and January 12," Jaydevan said.

Balaghat Inspector General of Police (IGP) KP Venkateshwar Rao said the police are probing the accident from all angles. The escort vehicle had met with the accident near Saleteka village at 12.30 am when Kawre was returning from her constituency Lanjhi in Balgahat in a car while the security personnel were in another four-wheeler behind her vehicle. She escaped unhurt as her driver turned the car towards a field when he saw the trawler-truck speeding straight towards their vehicle from the opposite direction, the SP said. However, the truck hit the police escort vehicle which was tailing the deputy speaker's car and then overturned, he said. The deceased were identified as sub-inspector Harshwardhan Solanki (30), head constable Hamid Sheikh (50), constable Rahul Kolare (26) and driver Sachin (22), he said.
