Supreme Court Clears Path for Demolition in Shalimar Bagh to Widen Road

The demolition of 143 unauthorized structures commenced in Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, after a Supreme Court ruling allowed for the removal of these encroachments for a vital road widening project. Following legal proceedings, officials acted on a decision to expand Road No. 320, enhancing connectivity with the Outer Ring Road.

This development follows a joint survey by several Delhi government departments that identified these permanent structures obstructing the proposed 30-meter wide corridor. Although the Supreme Court dismissed a challenge against the project, the district authorities emphasize their commitment to the court's ruling while also offering support to displaced residents.

The demolition is limited to 10.5 meters of the right of way currently encroached upon. The Delhi government has extended a relief package, including financial assistance and temporary accommodations, to those eligible families affected by the demolition.

Officials assure that the entire process will be conducted with a focus on compliance with judicial orders and mitigating the impact on families as much as possible. The effort will continue until all required areas for the project are cleared of encroachments.
