A team of experts in hospital architecture, including eight from Japan, Monday visited the site of proposed All India Institute of Medical Science at Thoppur in the district. Official sources said the team also comprising officials from central and state governments would carry out inspections till June 15 and submits its report to the government.
The much-delayed premier health institute, to be set up at a cost of Rs 1,264 crore, would receive financial support from Japan. In January last, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the AIIMS, the first such facility in Tamil Nadu.
The proposed 750-bed modern AIIMS here, on its completion, will also offer 100 MBBS seats. Though the Madurai AIIMS was announced in the 2015-16 budget, there was a delay in identifying the location and the union cabinet approval came in December 2018.
