Addressing the Independence Day function, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that patriotism was declining among the youth. The chief minister hoisted the national flag at the Old Secretariat building here on Thursday and inspected a Guard of Honour before addressing the gathering.
The spirit of patriotism is a must for the youth, but it is "declining in the current generation", Sawant said. "We need to inculcate this spirit among the youth so that everyone contributes to nation-building," he said.
"Every youngster should come forward on his own and contribute for society and for the development of the country which is an essential step towards creating the new India envisioned by prime minister Narendra Modi," he said. Goa was liberated from Portuguese rule 14 years after India got independence, he noted.
"But we have managed to keep up (despite the freedom coming late) with the country's development," he said. He also paid tributes to the coastal state's first chief minister late Dayanand Bandodkar and previous chief minister late Manohar Parrikar.
"We are indebted to Bandodkar and Parrikar who laid the foundation for the present-day Goa," he said. His administration was committed to providing corruption-free, pro-development governance, reaching out to the last person in the line, Sawant said..
