A school teacher was booked for allegedly sexually harassing a class 12 student in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district, police said on Tuesday. According to a complaint lodged by the girl on Monday evening, the teacher was making vulgar signs at her for the past two weeks, Circle Officer Satish Chandra said.

The complainant alleged that when she told the school manager about the incident, he threatened to give her less marks in practical subjects, he said. Later, she went to a police station with her maternal uncle and lodged the complaint.

A case was registered against the teacher under Section 354 (assault or criminal force against woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, the circle officer said. "A probe into the matter is underway and police are searching for the teacher," Chandra added.

Belghat Block Education Officer Udaibhan Kushwaha said the school is running classes for senior secondary students without any approval and a notice has already been sent to its management in this regard. He said a legal action will be taken against the school manager.
