India finally gets anti corruption chief, retired judge Pinaki Chandra Ghose appointed Lokpal

Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose has been appointed cheif of India's highest anti-corruption wing - The Lokpal. His appointment may trigger a controversy as Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge had boycotted the selection panel's meet on Friday. Justice Ghose, who retired from the Supreme Court in May 2017, is a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The Lokpal Act, which envisages the establishment of anti-graft body Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in states to look into cases of corruption against certain categories of public servants, was passed in 2013. The development comes a week after the Supreme Court asked Attorney General K K Venugopal to inform it within 10 days about a possible date for meeting of the selection committee.
