University of Ghana removes Mahatma Gandhi’s statue due to his alleged racism

A statue of the famous Indian Independence leader Mahatma Gandhi has been removed from University of Ghana’s campus. This is recently done after the protests from students and faculty who argue that Mahatma Gandhi considered Africans ‘inferior’.
The statue of Mahatma Gandhi was inaugurated by India’s former President Pranab Mukherjee two years back and this was also done to strengthen the relationship between the two nations.
A petition was launched by the professors of University of Ghana urging for its removal as early as possible claiming that the Indian Independence leader was ‘racist’. Hence, the university must put African heroes ‘first and foremost’.
Students of the university welcomed the decision of removing the statue calling it a massive win for all the Ghanaians as it (the statue) was incessantly reminding them how inferior there were. According to Obadele Kambon (head of language, literature and drama at the Institute of African Studies), the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue was an issue of ‘self-respect’.
“If we show that we have no respect for ourselves and look down on our own heroes and praise others who had no respect for us, then there is an issue,” he added.
