The demand in Kenya for stolen old model cars from Uganda has highly increased due to the requirement of spare parts of vehicles. According to the directorates of criminal investigations and crime intelligence, the surge in theft of old model cars around April this year follows Kenya's ban on importation of cars that were manufactured before 2011.

The spokesperson of the two directorates, Vincent Ssekate, the majority of the stolen cars are dismantled and parts are taken to Kenya where they are assembled, as reported by Daily Monitor. "There is an ongoing crackdown of criminals who steal older cars and sell them to their accomplices in Kenya. We have also set up a team to ensure that all the routes are monitored," Ssekate opined.

However, police officials have been unsuccessful to give the figures of vehicles they are suspecting to have been stolen from various parts in Uganda and sold in Kenya. But after detailed investigation, they discovered that the stolen materials were sold in Kenya. They also commented that the recent recoveries of stolen vehicles are made on the eastern side of Uganda.

On the other hand, the maximum number of vehicles stolen in Uganda have also been sold in South Sudan and DR Congo. Although Uganda permits the importation of vehicles that were manufactured in 2004, Kenya provides permission to the importation of vehicles manufactured in 2011 and above.
