In an unprecedented landslide victory, Prem Singh Tamang, the leader of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), credited the relentless hard work of his party cadres and the unwavering trust of the electorate as the cornerstone of their success in the assembly elections.
The SKM has retained power in the Himalayan state for a second consecutive term, winning 26 seats in the 32-member assembly so far, with the party leading in five more seats as counting continues.
At a celebratory gathering in Gangtok's Paljor Stadium, Tamang, who also serves as the chief minister, expressed his gratitude to the party supporters and voters.
'It is because of the love and trust of the people which we have managed to secure over the past five years in government. Besides, party cadres worked very hard. Now we have the next five years to give our 100 per cent for the people of Sikkim,' he stated.
Tamang emerged victorious from both the Rhenock and Soreng-Chakung constituencies he contested. The SKM's previous victory in 2019 saw them unseat the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), which had ruled the state for 25 consecutive years.
Former CM and SDF president Pawan Chamling faced defeat in both constituencies he contested.
'I also want to thank the opposition as it is because of them that our party became stronger and more organized,' Tamang added, urging party workers to maintain calm in the wake of their landslide victory.
