Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai, self-styled as 'Ungal Veetu Pillai' (your son) and 'Ungal Thambi' (your younger brother), delivered a formidable performance in Coimbatore for the Lok Sabha elections, securing a second-place finish, according to the latest leads.
Annamalai managed to push AIADMK's Singal G Ramachandran to the third spot with a margin exceeding 1.50 lakh votes. Meanwhile, DMK's Ganapathy P Rajkumar led Annamalai by 79,824 votes as of the latest counts. Despite high hopes and substantial groundwork by Annamalai, credited for bolstering BJP's presence in Tamil Nadu, the final results might see him as a runner-up.
On a broader scale, the BJP's persistent efforts in Tamil Nadu, involving heavyweights like PM Modi and Amit Shah, yielded a vote share of 11.01 percent. Smaller allies like PMK partly contributed to this tally, focusing on specific regional bases.
Annamalai had pledged 100 promises within 500 days, including ambitious projects like river clean-ups and an international airport. However, DMK's candidature, buoyed by welfare schemes and former city mayor Ganapathy Rajkumar's popularity, diminished Annamalai's chances. Anti-incumbency factors, particularly related to the impacts of demonetization and GST, also played a role.
