Congress' Lack of Big Names Led to Electoral Defeat in Uttarakhand

The absence of senior Congress leaders during the Uttarakhand campaign is cited as a major factor for the party's defeat. The absence of prominent Congress leaders during the Uttarakhand campaign is being seen by political analysts as a key factor behind the party's electoral defeat. The BJP clinched all five Lok Sabha seats in the state with substantial margins, marking a record third consecutive win.

"Prominent Congress leaders stayed out of the fray. It left party cadres dispirited. The lack of enthusiasm among party workers was evident from the very outset," said a political analyst from Dehradun. Analysts suggest that careful candidate selection and greater efforts to undermine the BJP's stronghold could have altered the outcome.

For instance, Manmohan Bhatt, a Dehradun-based analyst, believes that had Harish Rawat contested from Haridwar instead of his son, the results could have been different. Despite the loss, the Congress' vote share in Haridwar has risen since 2014, while the BJP's share has declined. Analysts argue that experienced candidates could have provided stiffer competition.

Other potential candidates like Pradesh Congress Committee president Karan Mahara and veteran MLAs Pritam Singh and Yashpal Arya might have fared better, Bhatt noted. Desertions by senior leaders and a lacklustre campaign, especially when compared to the BJP's vigorous efforts, further hampered Congress' prospects. In contrast, BJP's star campaigners, including Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, held multiple rallies and roadshows in the state.
