In a significant development, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren and senior JMM leaders, including Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto, convened with former CM Hemant Soren at Birsa Munda Central Jail on Saturday.
According to party insiders, the JMM heavyweights deliberated on the Lok Sabha election outcomes and strategized for the impending Assembly polls. Hemant Soren's wife, Kalpana Soren, who recently clinched an MLA seat, was also in attendance. This marked the first assembly of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leaders with the ex-CM since the Lok Sabha elections, a JMM official revealed.
During the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured eight seats, and its ally AJSU Party secured one, while the JMM and Congress won three and one seats, respectively.
Kalpana Soren notably triumphed in the Gandey assembly bypoll, defeating BJP challenger Dilip Kumar Verma by 27,149 votes. The vacancy arose after the resignation of JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad.
Hemant Soren faces detention by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case tied to an alleged land fraud.
In response to Champai Soren's prison visit to the former CM, Jharkhand BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo criticized, stating, 'This government operates from jail, not the CM secretariat.' Alongside Champai and Kalpana, JMM leaders including MPs Joba Majhi, Vijay Hansdak, and Assembly Speaker Mahto also met Hemant Soren.
BJP legislative leader Amar Kumar Bauri contended that Mahto's actions undermine his constitutional position by consulting with a former chief minister.
Bauri accused the Speaker of campaigning for candidates during the Lok Sabha polls, contradicting traditional practices, calling for Mahto's resignation. Countering the claims, Mahto described the encounter as a courteous visit to check on the former CM’s well-being, stating, 'I went there to enquire about his well-being. I have not met him ever since he was sent to jail.'
