Bulgarians are heading to the polls Sunday to elect a new parliament and participate in European Union elections, amidst a backdrop of political instability and economic inequality. Concerns are heightened by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

This marks Bulgaria's sixth parliamentary election in three years, reflecting deep voter fatigue and widespread disillusionment with politicians failing to combat corruption and fulfill reform promises, possibly leading to low turnout and a fragmented parliament.

Preliminary results are expected Monday for the 240 National Assembly seats and 17 European Parliament members. Leading the National Assembly race are the GERB center-right party, led by three-time Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, and the reformist coalition We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria. Past attempts to form a coalition between these rivals have fallen apart quickly.

The latest election campaign has seen both parties accusing each other of corruption, casting doubt on future cooperation. Another coalition appears unlikely, with analysts predicting another snap parliamentary election in the autumn.

Bulgaria, the EU's poorest member, risks losing billions in EU recovery funds due to stagnant reforms. Integration into the Schengen area and the eurozone is also postponed. Pro-Russian sentiments complicate NATO’s stance, intensified by the Ukraine invasion, with ultra-nationalist Vazrazhdane party possibly gaining more seats as it opposes anti-Russian actions.
