Bhartruhari Mahtab Named Pro-tem Speaker, Sparks Congress Criticism

Seven-term BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab has been appointed pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha, deviating from the norm of appointing the senior-most member. This decision has drawn criticism from the Congress, who argue that their eight-term MP Kodikunnil Suresh was overlooked. The pro-tem Speaker will administer oaths and preside over sessions until a new Speaker is elected.

The appointment of seven-term parliamentarian and BJP leader Bhartruhari Mahtab as pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha has stirred controversy. Traditionally, the senior-most member assumes this role, but Mahtab's appointment broke from convention, inciting criticism from the opposition Congress.

As pro-tem Speaker, Mahtab will administer oaths to new members of the 18th Lok Sabha and preside over the Lower House until the Speaker election. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced the President’s decision, adding that senior members from various parties would assist Mahtab.

Congress accused the BJP of undermining parliamentary norms by overlooking their eight-term member Kodikunnil Suresh. BJP's Amit Malviya responded by urging Congress to accept their election defeat. Historical precedents show similar deviations from the tradition of seniority in appointing pro-tem Speakers.
