On the 49th anniversary of the Emergency, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a scathing attack on the Congress, demanding that the party apologize for its decision. Speaking at his official residence, Adityanath termed the period as a 'black chapter' in Indian history.

'This black chapter (Emergency) was promulgated at midnight 50 years ago. The Congress had throttled democracy,' he told reporters, pointing fingers at former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for the decision, which saw prominent opposition leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan, Morarji Desai, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and L K Advani jailed.

Adityanath went on to assert that although the face of the Congress has changed over the decades, its character remains the same. He accused the present-day Congress of following the same authoritarian path, especially in states where it holds power.

The Emergency, enforced on June 25, 1975, led to the suspension of civil liberties, widespread jailing of political opponents, and imposition of rigid press censorship by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government.
