In a sweeping move to address growing unrest, Kenyan President William Ruto on Thursday dismissed nearly all of his Cabinet ministers. Ruto's decision comes after weeks of protests over high taxes and poor governance, leading to a promise to form a leaner, more efficient government.
In a televised address, Ruto also dismissed the attorney general and stated that ministries would be run by their permanent secretaries until further notice. He emphasized that his decision was shaped by public opinion and consultations for a broad-based government are ongoing.
The unrest, which saw protesters storm parliament and resulted in over 30 deaths, has put Ruto under immense pressure. The president’s renewed administration aims to tackle urgent issues such as debt, job creation, and corruption. Despite high tensions, key political ally, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, retained his position. Ruto also apologized for the “arrogance and show of opulence” by legislators, and announced austerity measures to save money.
