In a decisive move, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called on NATO allies to step up their defense spending to safeguard the alliance's values in what he described as 'a new and dangerous era'.

At his inaugural international summit, Starmer pledged that his government would draft a plan to raise the UK's defense spending to 2.5% of GDP, though he has yet to disclose a timeline. Avoiding questions regarding U.S. President Joe Biden's fitness for re-election, Starmer instead commended Biden for his leadership in orchestrating a successful NATO summit in Washington.

'This was a successful council, he led it, he deserves credit for that,' Starmer stated at a news conference. He emphasized the need for greater defense spending in light of significant threats from Russia, North Korea, Iran, and challenges in the Middle East, North Africa, and China.

An earlier analysis indicated that Britain's defense spending would reach 2.32% of GDP by 2024-2025. Starmer's debut on the international stage earned him a warm reception from Western leaders, who admire his strong parliamentary majority.
