Nepal's Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', will face a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on Friday. This follows the decision of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) to withdraw its backing.
CPN-UML, led by former prime minister K P Sharma Oli, recently partnered with the Nepali Congress, the largest House party with 89 seats, to form a power-sharing deal. Together, the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML hold 167 seats, significantly more than the 138 needed for a majority in the 275-member House.
Under Article 100 Clause 2 of the Constitution, Prachanda must secure a vote of confidence within 30 days if his party splits or if a coalition member retracts support. This vote marks the fifth such test for the 69-year-old prime minister since he assumed office on December 25, 2022. Prachanda needs at least 138 votes to maintain his position.
