On Friday, BJP leaders and workers staged a protest near the Delhi Secretariat against the AAP government over the recent electricity price hike in the city.
Addressing the demonstrators, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva accused the Kejriwal government of raising the power purchase adjustment charge (PPAC) without altering the per unit cost of electricity for political gain.
Sachdeva claimed that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal introduced PPAC to Delhi. The charge, which was 1.7 percent in 2015, has now escalated to 46 percent. PPAC is a surcharge imposed to cover fluctuations in power purchase costs incurred by electricity distribution companies.
The protesters, attempting to march towards the Delhi Secretariat from Shaheedi Park at ITO, were halted by police. Some, including Sachdeva, were detained when they tried to breach the police barricade.
Earlier, Power Minister Atishi alleged that the BJP was spreading false information regarding the increase in electricity charges.
