In a crucial legal triumph for Imran Khan's party, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is entitled to reserved seats for women and minorities in Parliament and provincial assemblies. In a significant ruling, Pakistan's Supreme Court has decided in favor of jailed ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), declaring the party eligible for the allocation of reserved seats for women and minorities in Parliament and provincial assemblies.
The controversial ruling nullifies an earlier decision by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and overturns a Peshawar High Court (PHC) judgment. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa led a 13-member full bench in making the decision, which is seen as a blow to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ruling coalition.
Reacting to the judgment, PTI officials called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja, accusing him of violating the Constitution. Despite the initial rejection of PTI-backed candidates, the Supreme Court's decision paves the way for PTI to secure its rightful share of reserved seats, impacting Pakistan's legislative dynamics.
