Growing Dissent: Democrats Urge Biden to End Reelection Bid
A rising number of Democratic lawmakers in Congress are urging President Joe Biden not to pursue reelection following his performance in a debate with Donald Trump. Citing concerns about Biden's ability to effectively campaign and defeat Trump, 19 representatives and one senator have called for a new Democratic nominee.
An increasing number of Democrats in Congress are calling for President Joe Biden to end his reelection bid after an underwhelming debate performance against Donald Trump. Despite Democrats holding 213 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and controlling the U.S. Senate with 51 seats, concerns over Biden's campaign are growing.
Many Democratic lawmakers have voiced unease with Biden's continued candidacy, while others remain supportive. Notably, 19 Democratic representatives and one senator have publicly urged Biden to step aside. Representative Earl Blumenauer stated, 'While this is a decision for the president and the first lady, I hope they will come to the conclusion that I and others have: President Biden should not be the Democratic presidential nominee.'
Lawmakers such as Representative Jim Himes emphasized the importance of strong leadership against Trump’s 'MAGA authoritarianism,' while others expressed admiration for Biden but called for new leadership. Senator Peter Welch became the first Democratic U.S. senator to join the calls for Biden to withdraw, underscoring the urgency felt within the party.
