Ursula von der Leyen Secures Second Term, Pledges Strong Defence and Green Future
Ursula von der Leyen won her second term as European Commission President, promising to focus on defence, climate action, and economic resilience. Backed by a coalition in the European Parliament, she emphasized the need for a European Defence Union and continued commitment to the Green Deal amidst various geopolitical challenges.
Ursula von der Leyen clinched a second term as President of the European Commission on Thursday, securing 401 votes in favour against 284 in the 720-member European Parliament. Her win followed a stirring speech in Strasbourg where she outlined her vision for prosperity and security in Europe amid global economic competition and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Von der Leyen highlighted the importance of not deviating from the Green Deal while easing its impact on industries. She also underscored the necessity for Europe to bolster its defence capabilities.
Addressing the Parliament, she declared that the next five years would be pivotal for Europe's future, stating, 'It will decide whether we shape our own future or let it be shaped by events or by others.' Her re-election was seen as a move towards continuity in navigating internal and external EU challenges, including the rise of far-right and eurosceptic parties.
Post-vote, von der Leyen responded to concerns about potential protectionist policies under a future U.S. administration, asserting that the EU will focus on self-reliance while maintaining alliances. She announced plans for a European Defence Union and applauded Green lawmakers for supporting her Green Deal commitments. Despite criticism from the Kremlin, von der Leyen's pledges resonate as the EU prepares for a crucial period ahead.
