EU Pledges €400 Million Aid to Avert Palestinian Authority Collapse
The European Commission will provide €400 million in financial support to the Palestinian Authority over the next two months to prevent its potential collapse. This aid, delivered through grants and loans, is contingent upon the Palestinian Authority's progress in implementing reforms. The initiative aims to ensure economic and political stability in the West Bank.
The European Commission announced on Friday it will supply the Palestinian Authority with €400 million ($435.5 million) in emergency financial aid over the next two months, amid fears within the EU that the authority may collapse.
Funds will be dispensed as grants and loans across three payments from July to September, contingent on progress in the PA's reform agenda, the Commission detailed in a statement. Earlier, the EU had signed a letter of intent with the PA to address its fiscal concerns.
'Together, we are laying the groundwork for economic and political stability in the West Bank,' stated European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The PA's financial woes have worsened, especially after Hamas's recent attack on Israel, which led to Israel withholding tax revenues. This funding is deemed crucial by Palestinian officials to alleviate their severe financial crisis.
Basic infrastructures have deteriorated, with government workers receiving partial salaries and health services on the brink of collapse. The PA's critical financial situation has hampered the West Bank administration, raising concerns about its future, particularly as global powers look for a 'revitalized' PA to govern Gaza post-conflict.
'The PA's financial situation is dire, and it benefits no one if they collapse. It's evident they need more funding,' added a senior EU diplomat ahead of the monthly foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels.
