Last week, Garcetti stated that 'strategic autonomy' is untenable in times of conflict and emphasized the need for India and the US to uphold democratic principles. Although Garcetti did not directly refer to Modi's trip, his remarks were perceived as a critique by Washington.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded, noting that India values its 'strategic autonomy' and respects the US ambassador's opinion, even though their views differ.
