President Joe Biden's election campaign last month outraised and outspent his challenger, Donald Trump, despite a poor debate performance, according to disclosures published on Saturday.
The main campaign account for Biden, a Democrat, raised $64 million in June and spent $59 million, primarily on campaign ads, leaving $95 million in the bank at the month's end, a Federal Election Commission filing revealed.
Republican Trump's account raised $21 million and spent about $10 million, with $128 million remaining in cash at the close of June. Following the June 27 debate, Biden raised over $5 million in three days despite his lackluster performance. However, calls from Democratic lawmakers for Biden to withdraw from the race have intensified this month, impacting his fundraising efforts.
Since early July, 35 congressional Democrats have publicly urged Biden to exit the race due to his age and debate struggles. Fundraising events for Biden are on hold as some donors call for his withdrawal. Should Biden leave, his campaign funds might transfer to Vice President Kamala Harris or the Democratic Party, which has already raised $39 million through its main fundraising group in June.
The Republican Party's main fundraising account raised $67 million in June, and the largest pro-Trump super PAC, MAGA Inc, raised over $22 million, with significant contributions from hotelier Robert Bigelow and former wrestling entrepreneur Linda McMahon. On Biden's side, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman gave $3 million to a super PAC backing the president's re-election effort.
