Police on Wednesday used lathicharge and water cannon to break up a Congress-led procession in Patna, directed by the party's youth wing chief, Srinivas B V. The procession was marching towards the Bihar Vidhan Sabha without administrative permission, according to a police officer.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Sachivalaya, Patna) Saket Kumar said, “We had put up a barricade at the Boring Road crossing to stop the unauthorized procession from entering the VIP area.” As Congress workers tried to breach the barricades, some resorted to stone-pelting, prompting “mild use of force and water cannon,” he added.
Several policemen sustained minor injuries and received first-aid. A case against the procession participants is being lodged, the district police stated. Srinivas B V criticized the “barbaric lathicharge” on what he claimed was a peaceful protest highlighting unemployment, price rise, and schemes like Agniveer. The Congress plans to stage further demonstrations on Thursday.
