During a heated debate on the 2024-25 Budget in the Lok Sabha on Monday, JMM leader Vijay Kumar Hansdak asserted that the economic situation in Bangladesh surpasses that of Jharkhand. Hansdak noted that the textiles industry in Bangladesh is stronger than India's, underlying the lack of job creation in the country.
Hansdak's comments were part of broader protests by the ruling JMM in Jharkhand. They rallied outside the state assembly in Ranchi, reacting vehemently to BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's suggestion that parts of Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Bihar be declared a Union Territory to curb Bangladeshi infiltration.
In a related Lok Sabha address, Dubey argued that the tribal population in the Santhal Pargana region is dwindling due to the growing number of 'Bangladeshi infiltrators.' The session also saw BJP members Raju Bista and Naveen Jindal, and Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh, voice differing views on regional development and the efficacy of the Budget.
