Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, demanded the removal of Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay on Tuesday, accusing him of partisanship in assembly proceedings.
In a letter to the principal secretary, Adhikari alleged that the Speaker, at the behest of the ruling Trinamool Congress, is arbitrarily disallowing all types of adjournment motions moved by the BJP, which discuss public issues. He further accused Bandyopadhyay of encouraging ruling party members to bring privilege motions against opposition members whenever the Speaker's role is criticized.
Adhikari also accused Bandyopadhyay of regulating proceedings and abusing discretionary power to hide governmental incompetence. He claimed that the Speaker is expunging portions of opposition speeches without valid reason and misinterpreting house rules. Adhikari also accused the Speaker of violating the constitution by bypassing the governor's role in swearing-in TMC MLAs and stifling media voice. Meanwhile, the Speaker said he would comment if a no-confidence motion is filed against him.
