India's Growing Role in Ukraine Conflict: A Diplomatic Shift
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell indicated that India might soon engage more actively in the Ukraine conflict. This statement follows Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Moscow and meetings with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. India is seen as potentially playing a responsible global role.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell announced on Tuesday expectations that India will become more involved in the Ukraine conflict. His comments came during a Senate hearing amid questions surrounding Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Moscow.
"I think we're likely to hear news of India engaging more directly in Ukraine. I'm grateful for that. I think India wants to play a responsible role globally," Campbell stated. Western nations have sanctioned Moscow following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, but India and China continue to trade with Russia.
During his Moscow visit, Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin against the backdrop of a deadly missile attack in Kyiv. Indian media speculate that Modi will visit Ukraine in August. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar highlighted the need for negotiations to end the conflict, emphasizing India's contact with both sides.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Jaishankar discussed the importance of a lasting peace in Ukraine. Campbell remarked on the critical nature of U.S.-India relations, considering India's significant diaspora and economic ties with Russia. Despite India's resistance to distancing from Moscow, the U.S. sees potential in solidifying strong bilateral relations.
