President Ranil Wickremesinghe Receives Key Endorsement for Re-election from SLFP

In a significant development for his re-election campaign, President Ranil Wickremesinghe received crucial backing from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) on Wednesday. This support enhances his bid for victory in the upcoming September 21 presidential poll.

The President's Office confirmed that SLFP Central Committee members met with Wickremesinghe, expressing their unwavering support. This decision follows extensive internal discussions within the SLFP, including meetings of the Central Committee, Politburo, and Executive Council earlier in the day.

Notably, this endorsement comes amid a turbulent political landscape, a day after 90 MPs from the Sri Lanka People's Front (SLPP) also decided to support Wickremesinghe. Despite internal party conflicts and threats of disciplinary action from the Rajapaksa-led SLPP, the President pushes forward as an independent candidate.
