Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced efforts towards peace talks during an Assembly session on Thursday. He revealed that several meetings have occurred in Silchar, Assam, with assistance from MLAs and other members.
Singh described the recent violence as unexpected and unwanted, warning that extreme measures could have negative repercussions. He urged people to avoid politicizing the situation, complicating peace efforts.
Responding to questions about violence despite a heavy police presence, Singh mentioned an ongoing investigation by a retired Supreme Court judge. He stated that election campaign promises have emotionally charged internally displaced persons, complicating their return home amidst the conflict.
