The Uttarakhand Congress on Friday postponed its Kedarnath Dham Pratishtha Raksha Yatra in view of the havoc in Kedarnath valley after heavy rain.

The yatra started on July 24 from Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar was to conclude on August 3 at Kedarnath temple. However, PCC president Karan Mahara called it off after reaching Sitapur in Rudraprayag district due to the disaster, said PCC senior vice president Suryakant Dhasmana. On his arrival in Sitapur, Mahara hoisted the flag with party workers and observed a moment of silence for those who lost their lives in the disaster.

In his address, Mahara said that the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had expressed concern over the disaster and appealed to postpone the yatra. Rahul Gandhi also instructed party workers to engage in disaster relief work.

Mahara expressed gratitude towards the party workers for their determination, walking 200 km over 10 days, calling their commitment 'commendable and exemplary'. He emphasized that aiding the affected people is their primary duty now and that the yatra will resume from Sitapur once the situation normalizes.
