A 24-year-old firefighter tragically lost his life while battling a forest blaze in northeast Jasper, Alberta. The young man, who was based at the Rocky Mountain House Fire Base, was struck by a falling tree on Saturday, according to a police statement.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported that they were informed about a serious injury to the Alberta Wildland Fire employee on Saturday afternoon. Despite efforts to extract him from the scene, the firefighter succumbed to his injuries. His death comes in the wake of a massive wildfire that devastated nearly a third of Jasper's structures with towering flames in late July.
Alberta's Minister of Forestry and Parks, Todd Loewen, extended heartfelt condolences on social media, addressing the firefighter's family, his fire-line crew, and the wider Alberta Wildfire community which comprises at least 700 personnel currently working in Jasper.
